Pet Adoption

Important Considerations When Selecting Your Pet:

  • A dog will likely be overly energetic when taken to the play yard to meet you. This behavior is not usually representative of their true personality.
  • If an animal came from a bad situation or has not been socialized in the past, they may take some time to trust and warm up to you. Please give them a chance and time to come out of their shell. This may require a few visits but it’s worth it to find your new best friend!
  • Consider the size of the dog and how much space the dog will require in your home.
  • Even if the dog was housebroken upon arrival at the shelter, they will most likely need a refresher course after being in the kennel for any length of time. Please be patient.
  • Puppies require a lot more time and attention than an older dog.
  • Pets must be kept indoors.
  • Pets must be taken to a veterinarian within 10 days of adoption.
  • Please remember the 3-3-3 Rule when adopting!

THE ADOPTION PROCESS

In recent years, lots has changed at ICHS and we are so proud of the amazing improvements and additions we have been able to achieve. Along with this, we have found ways to improve our adoption process to not only make it a better experience for our human friends, but our animal friends as well.

Let’s start with the application. Our applications can be found here, or you can stop in and pick one up.

If you stop by the shelter and submit an adoption application, and we currently do NOT have any appointments, we would be more than happy to show you our animals. With this in mind, we cannot guarantee that you will be able to see the animals as a walk-in since we do operate by appointment. We want to give both you and the animals the time deserved to spend together and for us to be able to answer all of your questions.

Always submit an application first so that we can get the process started for you!

Once we receive your application, make sure you let your references know that we will be getting in touch with them. Who answers the phone anymore, right? This can sometimes delay the application for quite some time so please let them know we will be calling. Please also call your vet and release records to us. Following these steps can help speed up the process and can have you taking your new best friend home sooner than you think!

Once the application is approved, we will then set you up with an appointment. The appointment is all yours! No interruptions, no cutting it short, just time for us to learn about you and your lifestyle and helping you find the perfect pet!

Once the application is approved, it is good for 6 months so if you check our website and see something you are interested in, you can just call us and set up an appointment!
