Lost & Found

LOST PETS

If you have lost your pet, it is important to act immediately. Once your pet has been found by another individual and resides at another location for more than 5 days, the pet is deemed owned by that individual. If your pet has been dropped at the Indiana CountyHumane Society, they are permitted to adopt the pet to another family after 48 hours.

  • Make sure that all of your pets have an appropriate collar, identification tag and license on at all times. You may even want to put your name and number and address on the collar or tag!
  • Each year, thousands of lost pets find their way to the Indiana County Humane Society. Contact the Humane Society immediately at 724-465-7387 and provide them with a detailed description of your pet. If you have a photo, drop it off or email it.
  • Check the local newspaper regularly. For example, the Indiana Gazette publishes found animals as reported by the Humane Society and concerned citizens.
  • Contact the local radio stations who may announce your lost dog.
  • Put up neighborhood signs.
  • Post on Facebook Lost and found pet sites right away along with your own social media.
  • Purchase a dog license at the County Treasurer’s Office. If your pet is found and the County is contacted, they will provide the owner’s name and address information.
  • Have your pet microchipped.

FOUND PETS

If you have found a pet it is important to take action immediately. Most importantly, do not keep the pet as the owner is most likely frantically looking for him or her. Do not assume the pet as been dumped. Dogs and cats have been reunited with owners after months of being on the run.

Here is some helpful information if you have found a pet:

  • If you can locate a license number, contact the County Treasurer’s Office at 724-465-3845. They will provide you with the name and address of the owner.
  • Please call the shelter at 724-465-7387. Owners often call to report a lost pet. We will take your information and do everything we can to locate the owners. DO NOT just drop off an animal or bring an animal to the shelter without calling and scheduling first. Please understand that ICHS will need time to set up space for the animal.
  • Take the animal to a local vet or rescue to scan for a microchip.
  • Take photos of the animal and post on social media including local Lost and Found pet sites.
  • If you cannot transport the pet, contact the State Dog Warden at 412-973-7585

Return to owner fees:

$30 for every day after until pick up. (With proof of ownership and License)

$100 for first day of animal that has been loose within 6 months

$50 for every day after until pick up. (With proof of ownership and license)

ALL FEES MUST BE PAID BEFORE ANIAML IS RETURNED TO OWNER

Once the owner has knowledge the animal is at The Indiana Co. Humane Society they have 24 hours to reclaim the animal unless another arrangement has been made and agreed upon by the owner and The Indiana County Humane Society. If the animal(s) is not reclaimed following these protocols, the owner forfeits their rights to the animal(s) and the animal becomes the property of The Indiana County Humane Society.

The Indiana County Humane Society & Humane Society Police Officers have the right to not return an animal if they feel it is being mistreated in anyway. This includes but is not limited to “frequent flyers” or animals that come in as strays multiple times.
